Activity 1: Identifying Risks and Hazards at Workplace

Activity 1- Identifying Risks and Hazards at the Workplace

Students will discuss potential dangers at different work settings and the results of the dangers they discuss with their partners.  Task 1- Activity 1a

Activity 1b: Identifying the difference between hazard and risk

Students will be provided with a text that explains the difference and the causal relationship between hazard and risk. Then, students will be provided with a situation and asked to differentiate between risks and hazard acid and the dangers it poses. The situation will be presented either through videos or pictures. Task 1-Activity 1b

Activity 1c: Identifying the hazards, risks and the causal relationship between them

Students will be asked to match the hazards with the risks. Students are expected to find out the causal relationship between hazards and risks. For each hazard there will be more than one risk as there may be serious and mild risks of that hazard (noise-hearing problems/complaint). This activity involves visuals for different work settings.

Example: Students are expected to label the noise as “hazard” and “hearing problems” and “complaint” as the risks.

Task 1- Activity 1c, Task 1- Activity 1c-Workbook.

Activity 1d: Expressing the causal relationship between the hazards and risks

After identifying the causal relationship between the hazards and risks, students will be asked to identify/detect the hazards and risks in different work settings provided in the previous exercise. Then, students will be asked to express the causal relationship between the hazards and risks in their own words.

Example:

Students will look at the picture of a construction site where workers do not wear any safety belt. They are expected to label “working at height” as “hazard” and “falls and injuries” as the risks.

Example sentences:

The construction workers are working at height and they do not wear safety belt.

Working at height without safety belts may cause serious injuries. Task 1- Activity 1d
