Activity 2 – Virtual Reality Game: “Maintaining the performance of a production process” (IN CLASS)
This is a game whereby students use Virtual Reality to discover a typical assembly line with various levers, buttons, dials …. During a predetermined time duration, they have to follow instructions, which they are given (either through a speech bubble written in front of them or through audio). Examples could be “Push the red button (once / twice/ three times)”; “Push and hold the green button”; “Pull the blue lever”; “Turn the round dial” …). The idea is to try to keep the assembly line functioning correctly. The commands come faster and faster, and are more complex (ex. “when the pressure gauge reaches 120, press the blue button twice, pull the brown lever and turn the middle dial halfway”), to be performed in a shorter and shorter lapse of time. Students win badges of varying grades (from machine operator => team leader => supervisor => floor manager => production manager => general manager => CEO!) for every correct procedure they perform, but lose a grade (or remain machine operator) for every mistake made (until they are “fired” after 3 mistakes). If the student succeeds in not being fired, the game will end after 5 minutes and display the final grade obtained. The student may make 3 attempts if he or she wishes.
Estimated timing in total for activity: 15 minutes in class
